SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOB PAPER IB OX MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ISAAC IVINGARD, ARTHUR W'. SAXON, and J ULIAN D S'roNn, citizens of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Safety Attachments for Paper-Box Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our said invention relates to a safety attachment for so-called single ending machines for applying ends to paper boxes and it is an object of the invention to provide such a device as may be applied to single ending machines of various types now in use without the necessity of changing other parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,

Figure 2 an end elevation of the same, certain parts being in section.
In the drawings 10 indicates the base of a paper box ending machine of any ordinary type and 11 standards or side members of the machine. A head 12 is slidably supported for movement up and down between said standards, such movement being imparted thereto by connecting rods of which one only is shown at 13 in the drawing. This connecting rod is mounted at its lower end on a wrist in 14 extending from a rotary shaft 15. n this head 12 is mounted the safety form 16 which is carried up and down by head 12 and makes an impression against the top plate of machine 29, and this form or die is supported by a pair of brackets 17 pivoted at 18 to a member fixed on the head 12. Normally the parts 16 and 17 are held in the position shown by a spring 19..
A pair of blocks 20 are slidably mounted on a rod 21 and are adapted to move from the position shown in Figure 1 into position behind the downwardly projecting arms of the brackets 17. When in the latter position they support the brackets rigidly and the die 16 is then, supported positively on top of the head 12 with which it moves upward against the top plate 29. When the blocks are in the position in Figure 1, however, the spring 19 can yield and allow the form and the. bracketsto swing down so that: if the operators hand, for example, shouldbe interposed between the top plate and-- the form itwill not be crushedhen, however, the for1n16 has approached so closely to. the top pla'te'29 that there is nothe standards 11. When, however, the'headmoves upward to actuate the die, the lever move away from the high part of the cam and its upper end is's'trongly drawn to the left by a spring 28 which quickly moves blocks 20 under the form brackets.
The device will prevent injury to the operator as it is so timed that the die cannot be positively actuated so long as: thereis any substantial distance; between it and the'upper die, the thickness of one quarter of an inch serving tortrip'the safetydev-iee.
It will be evident that various modifications can be made in the mechanism without departing from the spirit of our invention, the true scope of which is shown in the appended claims, and also that the safety de vice may be useful inother machines embodying principles similar to those of paper box ending machines.
Having thus fully described our said'i'nvention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An attachment for paper box ending machines comprising a die, apair of brackets for pivotally supporting the die, blocks adapted to prevent ivotal movement of the brackets, a rod slidably supporting the blocks, a lever attached to the blocks, a bracket on which the lever is pivoted, a spring for moving the lever in one direction and a cam mounted in stationary relation to the lever for moving it in the other direction, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a reciprocating head, a form pivotally carried by the head and movable relatively thereto said form having an arm extending therefrom to normally lie spaced from but adjacent to a face on said head, means slidable parallel to the pivot of the form for preventing such relative movement, and means acting at a predetermined point in the travel of the head in the absence of obstruction to such movement to bring said slida-ble means into operative position, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination, a stationary abutment,
a head movable toward and from the abutment, a form pivoted on the head for cooperation with said abutment, said form having an arm adjacent to a face on said head, the pivot for the form being between the working face of the form and said arm, a block slidably mounted between the face and the arm, and yielding means for sliding said block between said face and said arm at a predetermined point in the reciprocation of the head, substantially as set forth. 4:. In combination, a stationary abutment, a head movable toward and from the-abutment, a form pivoted on the head for movement relative thereto, an arnr extending from said form adjacent to a. face on said head, a rod extending transversely of the head, a block slidable on the rod into position between said arm and said face, and means for moving said block into such position at a predetermined time, substantially as set forth.
5. In a paper box ending machine, a vertically reciprocating head, a die movable with the head pivoted for oscillation transversely of the head said die having depending arms, a spring acting to hold the die in line with the head, a horizontal rod at right angles to the path of oscillation of the die, blocks slidable on the rod between the said arms and the adjacent face of the head to prevent oscillation of the die, a lever movable with the head, a spring acting on said lever to move the blocks into operative position, and a fixed cam on the machine frame holding the lever against the tension of the spring until the head is near the end of its stroke, substantially as set forth.
6. In a paper box ending machine, a ver-- tically reciprocating head, a die movable with the head said die being pivoted for oscillation transversely of thehead and having depending arms, a spring holding the die in line with the head, a horizontal rod at right angles to the path of oscillation Of the die, blocks slidable on the rod between the said arms and the adjacent face of the head to prevent oscillation of the die, a triangular braeket movable with the head, and havingits apex pointing downward, a lever pivoted at said apex, a rod secured to said blocks and pivotally connected with the lever, a spring secured at one end to the bracket and at the other to the lever to move the lever and the blocks toward operative position, and a fixed cam on the ma chine frame holding the lever against the tension of the spring until'the head is near the end of its stroke, substantially as set forth.
