Description

G. E. WORTH.
PRESS GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 24. 1919.
Hill! iaiaevo ordinary punch press having a bed soft material 18 such'as felt.
' eEoneE E. won'riif, 'QFROCHESTEB, nntvtzonn r s ee To all whom it may coma-Wt:
Be itknowntha L Gnoner. E. Won'rrn'a citizen. of the United States, residing. at Rochester, in'ithe county of Monroe and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and usefulfjImprovements in Press Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-nu merals marked thereon.
This invention relates to press guards and, more particularly, to a safety guard for use on operative mechanism such, for example, as-punch presses, the chief object of the invention being to provide a simple, efiicient, durable and inexpensive device of the above character readily adaptable to machines of various constructions. To these and other ends the invention consists in cei';
ent preferred as best illustrating the prin-v ciples involved, is shown as applied to an 5and adjacent thereto a standard 6 supporting the upper jaw or head 7 in whichis-rotatably supported a crank shaft 8. A pitman 9 is rotatably connected with the crank shaft and adjustably connected with a ram 10 supported and guided for reciprocating movement onthe head 7 by gibs 11.
Fixed on the standard and preferably on one of the gibs is a stud 12 on which is pivotally carried the guard hub 13 in a bore in which is slidably and adjustably secured by means of a set screw 14: a guard arm 15. At the other end of the latter is preferably secured by means'of screws 16 a guard plate lT'between which and the arm is carried a.
cushioning member composed of relatively The guard plate may, of course, have any desired shape and is preferably somewhat extended hori- Application filed December 24, sle. strain 347,089.
The guard zontally as shown in the drawings, the-cushioningmember' being provided tovprevent injuryjto'the hand or other member of the operator. as the 1 guard is V swung across the front of the bed upon'the descent of the rain by means-which will now be described;
adj ustable connection with the moving part or ram of the press comprising a pin orrstu d 19 fixed-on an arm 20 pr'ojectingfrom' the jguard hub 13 and having pivotally secured thereto a link 21 pivotally connected at its other end with a pin or stud 22 on a member ad uStably secured to the rain. This adjust able member in the present/instance comopenings or slots 24 engaging studs 25 fixed on the ram and provided with clamping nuts so that the block may be adjustably clamped to the ram; 'By the adjustment of the blockit is apparent that the movement of the Specification of Letters fat'entl V l ispreferably j-actuateduby an prises ablock 23 having therein elongated guard relative to the movement of the ram may be conveniently adjusted either to in sure that the guard is actuated through a;
so j
range of movementsuitable for moving-the hand ofthe operatorout of thepath of the ram, or, in caseofthe variation of the range" of movement of the ram in accordance with the work-being done on the press, to main tain' a uniform actuation of the guard through the proper range of movement ina dependently-of the variation in the movement of the ram.
As is apparent 'fro m the description of its. construction, the guard is swept. across the front of the bed by its actuating connection] with the movable part or ram and the cush.-'
ioned part of the guard removes'the hand Y of the operator from the path'of therain without damage to the hand while the guardplate 17 insures that the hand is maintained out of the path of danger. 'Byladj-ustment ofblock23 the movement of the guard may be conveniently adjusted. to the machine .or press for a uniform movement ,of the ram or. when the movement of the ram is adi-f' justed in accordancewith the work the move.- ment of the guard maybe maintained uniform. I
The construction of the dev ce is exceed. inglv simple and its modeof operation efiicient. -Its construction adapts it for application to machines of various types," while the cost of productionis obviously lows I claim as my invention:
1. The combination w1 th a machine hav ing a frame and an opera tin partmovable on said frame,v ofa'member pivotall'y carried by the frame, a guard for said operating part having an arm connected with said actuated and controlled in its movement by a pivotal connection at one end with said element and having a pivotal connection at its other end with the arm on said member.
3. The combination with a machine having a frame and an operating part movable on said frame, of a stud on said frame, a
hub pivotally supported on the stud and formedwith a socket, an arm longitudinally adjustable in said socket and carrying a guard for said operating part, anarm" fixed on said hub and extending transversely'of the path of movement of; said operating part, a block adjustably fixed on said: op: erating part, and a linlrpivotally connected at one end with said block'and at the other with said hub arm.
