" v; ls t '4 WALTER s. RUNNELS, or KALAMAZOQ, MICHIGAN.
FILING AND 'SAWING MACHINE.
Original appflication filed February 18, 1922, Serial N0.'537.54-2. Divided and this 5, i923. Serial mpszaele.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. RUNNELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing and Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specifioation.
This invention relates to improvements in filing and sawing machines.
I have illustrated my improvements as embodied by me in a sawing and trimming machine such as is illustrated in my application for Letters Patent filed February 18, 1922, Serial No. 537,542, my present appli cation being a division thereof. My improvements are, however, readily adaptable and desirable for use in machines designed for other work.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved machine of the class described in which the parts are effectively housed and protected and at the same time are readily accessible for adjustment and repair.
A further object is to provide an improved sawing and filing machine which is easy to operate and very simple and economical in structure.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a left-hand side elevation of a sawing and trimming machine for electrotypes and the like embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a fragmentary view mainly in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I.
In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all of the views.
application filed Mach Referring to the drawing, the base 1 is of suitable size to receive and support the pedestal 2 which has a table 3 mounted there on. The pedestal has a rearwardly projectlng arm 4 on which the angled arm or head 5 is mounted. This arm is of I-beam or cross section, that is, it has flanges 6 and 7 providing channels 8 in the sides thereof.
The motor 9 is mounted at the rear end of the base 1 and is connected by the belt 10 to a pulley 11 on the shaft 12. The work holder, designated generally by the numeral 13, is described in detail in my above mentioned application for Letters Patent.
he jig-saw 15 is connected at its lower end to the plunger 16 supported in the guide 17 on the side of the pedestal. This plunger is connected by the connecting rod 18to the crank disk 19. This crank disk is driven by the belt 20 coacting with a suitable pulley on the shaft 12, the pulley not being illustrated, the crank disk 19 also being adapted as a pulley.
The upper end of the saw 15 is connected to the retracting plunger 21 reciprocating in theguide 22 and connected by the lever 23 pivoted at 24 to the retracting spring 25, the lower end of the spring being secured by the eye-bolt 26 to a lug 27 within the chamber 8, the lever 23 being disposed within this chamber. This lever is connected by the link 28 to the retracting plunger.
I have illustrated a jig-saw, but it will be understood that a file or like tool may be substituted therefor should occasion require.
I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention which I find very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other modifications or adaptations as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention re-' lates to embody or' adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a pedestal having a rearwardly projecting arm, a table mounted on said pedestal, an angled head mounted on said arm to overhang said table and having a channel-like housing in one side thereof, a plunger slidably mounted on said pedestal, driving means therefor on said pedestal, a tool retracting slide mounted on said head, a tool connected to said plunger and slide, and means for retracting said slide disposed in said channel-like housing.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination of apedestal, a table mounted thereon, a head mounted on said pedestal to overhang said table and having a channel like housing in one side thereof, a plunger slidably mounted on said pedestal, driving means therefor on said pedestal, a tool retracting slide mounted on said head, a tool connected to said plunger and slide, a lever having a link connection to said retracting slide pivotally mounted in said housing of said head member, and a coiled spring disposed Within said housing connected to th outer end of said lever.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
