To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved VVork-Table Guard for Power-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
This invention relates to automatic guards for use in connection with the work table of punching, stamping and other power presses, whereby the workman is prevented from keeping his hands in such position with respect to the work that they are liable to be injured by the machine in performing its operation.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of automatic guards of the character referred to so as to be reliable and efficient in use, comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and so designed as to be easily adjustable when the set of the work table is changed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a workmans guard in which the operating connections are mounted wholly under the work table so as to be out of the way, and connected with the usual clutch pedal of the power press so that with the depression of the pedal for throwing on the power the guard will be also thrown into operation so as to cause the operator to remove his hands from the danger zone of the machine.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description pro- 1 ceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto. 7 I In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a front view of a power press; Figs. 2 and 3 are side views showin different positions of adjustment of the body of the press with respect to the base; Fig. 4L is a detail sectional view on the line 4- 1, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 55, Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6-6, Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the base or stand of the press, and B is the or stamp head 7 which cooperates with work-holding means 8 on the operating table 9.
The protective device comprises an oscil latory guard C and operating means D. This guard includes a rod or shank 10 which swings along the front edge 11 of the work table 9, there being a guide 12 applied to the table so as to form a horizontal slot in which the rod 10 moves. On'the upper end of the rod or shank 10 is an arcuate member, such as a wire frame 13, which will occupy a position in front of the work and die, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 when the press is in operation, but when the die-carrying head 7 is raised the guard will move down from the broken-line to the full-line position, where it will remain as long as the power is off the press. The operating means D is located under the table 9 and comprises a depending arm 14 which has fulcrumed at 15 a swinging lever 16, the upper end of which is connected by a hinge joint 17 with the lower end of the guard member 10. At a point below the pivot 15 is fulcrumed at 18 on the arm 14: a bell-crank lever 19 which has one arm 20 connected by a link 21 with the lever 16, while the other arm 22 is connected by a rod 23 with the pedal 1. Any suitable adjusting means may be provided for connecting the rod 23 with the arm 22 of the bellcrank lever. In the present instance the arm 22 is shown with a plurality of openings 24 into any one of which is fastened a bolt 25 and on this bolt is a swiveled block 27 that has an opening 28 through which extends the rod 23, and a set-screw 29 in the block is adapted to engage the rod 23 and hold the same fixedly in place. The adjustment between the rod 23 and bell-crank lever is necessary in order to enable the press to be adjusted from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3, or vice versa, because, in this adjustment, the distance between the pedal ,1 and the work table changes, as will be apparent by a comparison of the two figures, and also during this adjustment the relation between the guard member 10 and lever 16 will change. The supporting arm 14 is connected with the work table 9 in such a manner as to be adjustable, as this arm will occupy an approxi: mately vertical position at all times. Any suitable means may be employed for providing for this adjustment, but in the present instance a bracket 30v is fastened to the under side of the table,'and between the lugs 31 of this bracket is engaged the hub 32 of the arm 14:, and passing through the lugs and hub is a bolt 33 suitably fastened to the arm 14 so as to be rigid therewith. By loos-v ening the nut 34 of the bolt 33 the arm 14- can be adjusted with respectto the table 9, and when adjusted in thehproper position the bolt is tightened so that the armwill be rigid with re'spect'to the table.
In operation the operator presses the pedal 1 when the work isin proper position on the table, and in doing this the power is thrown on. At the same time the bell-crank lever 1 9is' oscillated in a clockwise direction, Fig. 1, and this in turn through the link :21 and .lever 16 carries'the guard C from the full to the dotted line position, Fig- 1, and during the upward movement of the pedal by the spring35, the guard is returned to normal position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative andthat such changes may bemade when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims. 1. The combination of a machine including a work table, a working element co6pcrating therewith, and an operators device for throwing on and off the power for the Working element, with a guard mechanism carried wholly by the table and located under the same and having a member extending upwardly along the front of the table and movable back and forth, and a connection' between the guard mechanism and the device for throwing on and off the power.
2. The combination of a power press ineluding means for throwing on and off the power, a work table, with a guardmovableguard and supported by the work table, and
a connection including a motion multiplying device between the guard operating means and the said means for throwing on and off the power. I
3. The combination of a machine of the class described including a work table, and
. throwing on and off the power, with a work table guard comprising means movable back and forth at the front of thet'able,;an adjustable supporting arm mounted on the bottom of the table, a lever on the arm and to which the said means is hingedly connected, and a motion multiplying means .between the pedal andlever for moving the latter back and forth.
