To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL LEO, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Elizaboth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Treadle-Operated Mechanism for Seal-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot controlled mechanism for operating seal presses, and my improvements include means for expeditiously and conveniently fitting and securing the ordinary type of hand press on a table, and adjustably engaging the usual hand lever to the foot operating mechanism in such manner that pressure upon a pedal associated -with said mechanism will depress the lever and cause the seal press to perform its function. My improvements further include the employment of a registering device to indicate and record the number of pressure impulses given with means for operating said register in each pressure impulse; also including a novel and convenient method of guiding the sheets to be impressed.

In carrying out my invention I employ a table, as a, upon which a seal press, as b, is seen to be mounted, the said table being supported, as by standards 0 having a pedestal as cl. Obviously the construction and arrangement of the supports and pedestals may be of any suitable character, that shown in the drawing being a mere example.
The table a is to be supported at a suitable height for the operator feeding the sheets thereto for impression. At a suitable lower point a pedal as e is mounted upon a lever as 7, which is pivoted at its opposite end f in a bracket d which extends rearwardly from the pedestal d. A lever g pivoted at g in a bearing 9 secured against the under, forward side of the table, extends rearwardly beneath the table, for adjustable pivotal engagement, as at 9 with a bar it that is adapted at its free end for removable engagement with the lever 12 of the seal press I). A vertical rod 71 is in pivotal engagement with levers f and g, serving as a link between these two 1 is a side elevation of the appamembers, whereby the lever g is rocked with the foot operated movement of lever f. The arm it has a series of holes hf for pivotal engagement with lever g, whereby the height of said arm it may be adjusted to suit the varying lengths of seal press levers, it being intended in the operation of the device, that the downward pull of arm h with the pedal pressure aforesaid will swing downwardly the seal press lever 6, thereby causing the press to perform its impressing function.
In order that the lever' b of the seal press may be easily fitted at the free end of arm h and removably held in engagement therewith with sufficient rigidity for the purpose, I provide, at the end of said arm h, a pair of clamping plates, as 3,
which plates are secured to arm h by a wing screw, as j, passing through alined threaded orifices in said plates and through the end of arm h, which lies between said plates. The width of arm k separates the plates j to provide a space for the reception of the curved end of seal press lever 79, and said plates j have opposed, centrally disposed, transverse grooves or recesses y' to suitably contain the width of said lever arm. The free ends of said plates 3' have alined threaded orifices to receive a winged clamping screw 7' The screws j and j obviously may be loosened to allow the plates to receive the lever arm 7), and may be tightened to hold said lever arm securely;
The operative stroke of the pedal being in a downward direction it is necessary to provide means for returning the pedal and its associated members to the upward position, to which end I employ a spring, as k, which may be connected to rod 2' as by a lug or abutment extending from said rod and serving to hold one end of said spring, the opposite end of said spring being connected, as to a strap or yoke Z, which is secured to the under side of the table, straddling the lever g, to not interfere with the movement of said lever.
It being desirable to furnish means of recording the number of impressions made by the seal press I affix a registering device, as m, to the upper surface of the table where it is exposed to view, and I attach a connector, as a, which may be in form of a helical spring, to the operating arm as m of said register. Said connector it passes through an orifice provided therefor in the table and is engaged with the lever g, as by a stud 42, whereby with every,
downward movement of: lever g the connector n imparts a single impulse to the arm m, causing the latter to operate the register mechanism in the, usual manner.
Upon the upper surface of table a I provide reception means for the base of the usual type of handsealpress in order that the seal press may be removably but sc cu'rely held upon said table during the period of its use in conjunction with the operating mechanism. Said recep'ti'oi'i means include a heel lug 0 which has a recess 0 to receive the heel b of the seal press base. A thumb screw 0 is threaded through said lug 0 to bear upon the top surfaceof the heel part b to secure the press at that point. At the forward portion of the table there are placed and secured the opposed lugs 79 which are separated sufiiciently to receive between them the forward portion of the base of thevusual type of seal press. To allow for variations in width and to vsecure the seal press atits forward portion, I provide the wing screws, 7) which are threaded throughsaid lugs p in opp'osed relation, in order that when the seal press base is between said lugs p, the screws 9 may be tightened up against said base to thus securely hold the seal press in easily removable manner upon the table.
The table may be provided withhinged side leaves as 4) which may have any usual means, as the slides to w, for holding them extended at the level of the table,- or for 7 allowing them to be folded down when not in use.

means thereon to removably retain a seal press, a pedestal, a table'sup port extending from said pedestal,- a treadle lever pivoted to said pedestal, a lever pivoted beneath the table, an adjustable arm pivoted to said seal presses,
means thereon to removably retaln a seal link between said levers for communicating the treadle movement, to the seal press lever, and a spring to elfect the return 1 movement 2. A foot actuated device for operating the same comprising a table,
press, a pedestal, a table support extending from said pedestal, a treadle lever pivoted to said pedestal, a lever pivoted beneath the table, an adjustable arm pivoted to said last named lever, a pair of separated plates pivoted at the free end of said arm, said plates having opposed transverse grooves on their inner surfaces to receive the free end of a seal press lever, a link between said levers for communicating. the treadle movement to the seal press lever, and a spring to effect the return movemen.
