Abstract

222,021. Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., and Thomas, H. Jan. 24, 1924. Cutting slices in succession. - A meat &c. slicer with a vertically revolving knife and a horizontally reciprocating table is provided with a movable abutment for re-positioning the meat &cparallel to the face of the knife after it has once been on the machine. Such a machine is described in Specification 215,403. The present invention differs in this that by a movement of the abutment by hand or otherwise the feedregulating mechanism is automatically set. The abutment can be moved out of the way either automatically or bv hand. The arrangements are e such that the thickness of successive slices can be determined either excluding or including the first slice. In the machine shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, an abutment 24 is moved into position parallel with the knife (not shown) and is set by a hand-wheel 40, Fig. 3, with an indicator 41 to give the thickness of slice required. This is arranged by rotation of a rod 39 actuating a gear wheel 38 in mesh with a slide rod 34 connected at one end to a part 31 slidingly connected to the abutment 24 and at the other end to a pivoted quadrant 36 meshing with a bar g to set the feed of the machine. The abutment 24 is carried on a slide 26, Figs. 1 and 2, provided with a tongue 30 engaging the part 31 of the setting apparatus. The slide 26 moves horizontally at right angles with the plane of the abutment, and vertically on a slide 21 embracing a vertical guide 20 on the main frame B of the machine. The abutment 24 is tripped out of the way of the meat &c. as soon as the machine is started by a pin 37 on the fly-wheel D operating a cranked lever 28 pivoted at 29b and connected by a screw 29<a> and slot 28<b> to the slide 21. The bar g, Fig. 2, referred to above, operates a pivoted link g<1> connected to a cam h upon which slides a roller f. This roller on the end of a bell-crank e<1>, e operates a pawl ratchet feed d, c of the feed screw a, Fig. 1. A meat &c. holder C, Fig. 2, indicated in part, has a toothed portion b engaging the feed screw a. According to the movement of the bar g the cam h is set to give more or less movement to the ratchet and so to the holder C for different thicknesses of slice. In the second form of machine, shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the abutment 24 is carried by a plate 24a guided between squared arms 51 sliding in the main frame B. The plate 24<a> is also provided with a slot 24b with an enlarged end 24<d> into which a sprung handle 60 slides to hold down the abutment. The handle 60 can be withdrawn from the slot 24d allowing the abutment to rise under the influence oi a pivoted weight 55 or spring. The handle 60 can be used to draw forward the abutment 24 to set the thickness of the first slice. This is done by turning the rod 50 the threaded part 50a of which advances the collar 56 and abutment. The thickness of subsequent slices can be arranged for by turning the rod 50 according to an indicator 60a to set a pinion 62 operating a cam 63 controlling the feed mechanism. The abutment can be moved to an inoperative position by hand, or automatically by an eccentric 65 on the fly-wheel shaft H bearing against a roller 66 on a forked rod 64 connected with a pivoted lever 53 supporting the abutment. In a modification, the abutment is mounted so that it can be moved from the machine after its supporting bracket and the feed have been set. In another modification, the abutment (Figs. 4 and 5) may be arranged to rise in the plane of the cutter and not in advance thereof so that all the slices are of the same thickness.
