Abstract

Cutting slices in succession.- Relates to detail improvements in slicing-machines of the type in which material to be sliced is reciprocated towards and from a rotating disk knife. The carrier is reciprocated by a roller 17, Fig. 1, carried by chains 15 forming part of the gearing of the machine, the roller engaging top and bottom slots in a bracket 18 secured to the carrier. The material is clamped by a bar 68 carried by sleeves 71 which can be clamped in any position on uprights 67. A modified clamping bar is shown in Fig. 9, this having pins 81 carried by a bar 79 supported by rollers 78 which can be depressed by eccentrics 77 to cause the pins 81 to project considerably and firmly hold small pieces of material. For slice feeding, a feed-screw is turned by a lever 34, Fig. 3, carrying a pawl engaging a ratchet-wheel on the screw, the lever being engaged by a fixed cam 35 as the carrier reciprocates. For regulating the thickness, the return of the lever is limited by an adjustable stop 37. For cutting thicker slices, an adjustable member 46 is brought into the path of a second lever similarly driving a spur-wheel gearing with a pinion on the feed-screw. The nut on the feed-screw is made in two parts normally pressed towards the screw by springs but withdrawn by cams when it is desired to move the carrier along the screw. A knife-sharpener comprises two stones e, f, Fig. 8, pressed towards each other by springs and pivoted on a spindle p. A flat spring r has its end aslant to tend to push the stones about the spindle p out of contact with the knife and also to press the stone e towards the knife when the whole device is pulled into contact with the knife by a rod t, Fig. 1. The rod t may be automatically pulled and released by a pawl z, Fig. 11, on a lever y engaged by the bracket 18 as this reciprocates, the pawl z engaging a ratchet-wheel secured to a cam dd having a pin ff engaging a hooked member cc which moves the rod t to bring the sharpener into position. The ratchet-wheel is turned until the pin ff pulls the sharpener into position. Shortly afterwards, the cam dd lifts the member cc and allows the rod t to return and the sharpener to move out of contact with the knife. A metal sheet acting as a slice guide has a portion c, Fig. 1, adapted to scrape the knife. A pad 90 of rubber or felt may clean the knife edge. A roller or ball may steady the edge of the knife in the proximity of the scraper c.
