Abstract

681,413. Cutting paper webs. WARNERJONES & CO., Ltd., K. Oct. 29, 1951. [Oct. 27, 1950] No. 26277/50. Class 31 (i). A method of detaching individual printed form units 2 ... 6 from a transversely perforated continuous stationary web 1 consists in subjecting the web to a double guillotine action which cuts the web twice to each major feed of the web through the separating machine, the two cuts being effected in the region of each cross perforation line 7 ... 10 and taking place on opposite sides and close to such line. The web is moved forwardly by means of feed rollers 13, 14 and an auxiliary pull through rollers 23, 24. The movement of the web is stopped for the first cut with the respective line 7 of perforations slightly in the rear of a movable knife 11 co-operating with a fixed knife 12. After the first cut of the knife 11 and its return to its normal position, a looper roller 15 rises and permits the web to be straightened out by the auxiliary pull through the rollers 23, 24, the leading portion of the web being thereby moved to a position where the line 7 is located slightly forward of the knife 11 whereupon the latter descends to cut off a narrow strip, including the line 7, from the web. The cycle of operations continues, with the web moving through the machine, by a succession of alternate long and short steps. The cut-off unit may be of rotary type with two knives in which case the feed of the web takes place continuously in timed relation with the cutting mechanism. As the web passes through the machine, its side edges are preferably trimmed by means of rotary trimmers or circular cutting knives. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the looper roller may be mounted on arms fast with a cross shaft and move through a circular path. The arms may be duplicated to carry a second looper roller.
