6 Claims.
This invention is directed to an improvement in the window forming mechanism of my Patent No. 1,995,719 of March 26, 1935, and has for one of its objects the provision of means for insuring the same speed for die and web at the instant the cross cut is made at the ends of the window opening.
A further object of my invention is the provision of means whereby the length of the win- 19 dow opening may be varied.

As briefly pointed out above this invention is as directed to improving machines for providing window openings in a traveling web of paper. The window opening of course may be of any desired size but in any event a section of paper must be removed from the web of paper as the 89 same is advancing through the machine to where the windows are applied, for instance. The die is of the rotary type and cooperates with a rotary anvil, both the die and anvil rotating continuously during the operation of the machine 35 and in the forming of the window openings in the traveling web- It is obviously advantageous to insure that the paper and the die travel at the same speed when the die makes the cross cuts at the ends of the window opening, travel 40 of the paper web and the die at different speeds during these stages of forming the window opening tending to cause the paper to tear, and particularly if the paper is traveling at a faster speed than the die.

application to show the mechanism by which the windows are applied to the window openings in the paper web inasmuch as the same constitutes a part of the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,995,719 above referred to. The die 4 comprises 5 sides 4' andend knives 4". The leading end knife makes a transverse cut in the paper, the sides 4' slit the paper from there until the trailing end knife makes its transverse cut.
As pointed out above it is desirable in a ma- 1o chine for cutting window openings in a continuously moving or advancing web to provide that the speed of the die which forms the opening shall be the same as the speed of the paper when the transverse cuts are made at the ends of the iii window opening.
The rotary die 4 in the present instance is driven at a predetermined speed from gear l2 through intermediate gear l3 and gear l4, the latter being on the shaft l5 which carries the die. The die cooperates with rotary anvil 5 which is driven through gear [5 driven .oif shaft l5.
As explained in connection with my Patent No. 1,995,719, above referred to, the anvil 5 is made adjustable so as to accommodate the machine to dies 4 of varying diameters, and so that the anvil may be moved away from the die to permit of threading the machine initially.
The present invention provides that one of the 80 control rollers 6 which engages the paper web,
as above explained, shall be moved intermittently and automatically to vary the speed of the web 2 at the instant the leading end knife 4"makes its transverse cut, and at the instant the trailing end knife 4" makes its transverse cut, so that at these times the die and paper will be moving at the same speed. This roller 6 is mounted on an arm 16 pivoted on the center about which the roller 1 rotates, the arm l6 being one arm of a bell crank lever, the other arm of which is designated I1 and is attached to an upwardly extending rod I8.
The upper end of the rod ID has an adjustable slot and pin connection with the arm I! of a 5 bell crank lever which is pivoted at 20 to the frame of the machine. The other arm 2| of this bell crank lever carries a cam follower 22 cooperating with a cam 23, the latter being mounted on the shaft 24 which for the purposes of this my invention may be considered the drive shaft of the machine. The cam 23 is made up'of two plates 25 and 26 which are bolted to each other by bolts 21, the plate 25 being provided with active surface 28,- the plate 26 with active surface 2!. The plates are slotted to permit of their relative adjustment circumierentially of the shaft 2 to vary the spacing of the active surfaces II and 29 to take care 01' window openings oi ditl'erent lengths. The cam follower is held against the cam by a spring-not shown.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that in operation 01' the machine the cam suriaces 28 and 29 will cause the bell crank lever arm I! to be rocked about the pivot 20 to impart a movement to the control roller 8 from the full line position to the dotted line position 01' Fig. 4, the roller snapping back to full line position as the came follower rides of! the high spot of the cam. It will be appreciated that the cam plates 25 and 28 are so adjusted relatively to each other that this vibration of the roller 6 takesplace at the leading end oi! the window opening and at the trailing end. The primary purpose of this arrangement is to eilect a momentary variation in the linear speed of the web when the transverse cuts are made so that the die and .web on these occasions are traveling at the same speed to insure a clean transverse out of the web at the ends of the window opening. Intermediate the ends of the window opening the paper may travel at a much higher speed than the die, the sides of the die slitting the paper lengthwise. This, it will be apparent, permits window openings to be out which are much longer than the die, so that the same die may be used for openings of difl'erent lengths.
In Fig. 7 the window opening has been designated 30 and the ends of the window opening 3| and 32. The sides of the window opening are produced by the side knives 4' and the ends by the end knives 4". The shape and size of the opening may be varied, as will be understood.
It is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of the structure herein illustrated and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine for providing window openings at intervals along the length of an advancing web, the combination of a rotary cutter, a cooperating rotary anvil, a roller engaging the web beyond the cutter and anvil, and means for displacing; said roller intermittently, to change the speed of theweb to the peripheral speed of said rotary cutter at the ends of the window opening.
2. In a machine for providing window openings at intervals along the length of an advancing web,- the combination of a rotary cutter, a cooperating rotary anvil, a bell crank lever, a roller carried by said lever about which the web passes, an adjustable cam, means actuated by said cam for rocking said bell crank lever to displace said roller and web intermittently to vary the speed of said web to that of the cutter at the ends of the window opening.
3. In a machine for providing window openings at spaced intervals along the length of an advancing web oi material, the combination of means for advancing the web, a rotary cutter and a cooperating anvil in the path oi travel 01' said web, a bell crank lever, a roller in contact with said web carried by one arm of said bell crank lever, a rod connected to the other arm of said bell crank lever, a second bell crank lever at the other end of said rod, a cam for actuating said last mentioned bell crank lever to rock the first mentioned lever to displace said roller and web to vary the speed 01' the web to that of the punch at each end of the window opening.
4. In a machine for providing window openings at spaced intervals along the length of an advancing web of material, the combination of means for advancing the web, a rotary cutter comprising side knives and transverse end knives, in the path of travel 01' said web, a bell crank lever, aroller contacting with said web carried by one arm of said bell crank lever, a rod connected to the other arm of said bell crank lever, a second bell crank lever at the other end of said rod, a cam for actuating said last mentioned bell crank lever, said cam having adjustable cam surfaces adapted to rock the first mentioned lever to displace said roller and web intermittently to efl'ect a change in the web speed to that of the cutter at the instant of operation 01 said transverse knives.
5. In a machine for providing window openings at intervals along the length of an advancing web, the combination of a rotary elongated cutter, a cooperating rotary anvil, means for advancing said web between the cutter and anvil at a different linear speed from that of the said cutter, and means for displacing the web thereby automatically to vary its speed at the beginning of the operation of the cutter and for again displacing the web to vary its speed at the end of the operation of the cutter to eifect movement of the web at those instants at the same linear speed as that of the said cutter.
6. Ina machine for providing window openings at intervals along the length of an advancing web, the combination of a rotary die having side knives and end knives, a cooperating rotary anvil,
" means for passing the web between the anvil and cutter at a different linear speed from that of the cutter during the operation of said side knives, and means for displacing the advancing web at the time of operation of the leading end knife and again at the time of operation of the trailing end knife, to effect movement of the web at those instants at the same speed as that of the cutter.
