This invention relates to inechanis n for slicing thin layers off a strip of material, and particularly to a machine for skiving reliners. H 1
The general object of the invention is to provide a machine which is particularly adapted for the purpose of ski'ving reliners such as are used in pneumatic tires, and in this connection to provide a machine which is particularly effective for this purpose, wherein there is a transversely reciprocating knife adjustable with relation to the table, and two rolls, one of the rolls being power driven, which hold the reliner down upon the table and against the action of the knife, one of the rolls being adjustably held to control the thickness of the slice taken off by the knife. 0
A further object is to provide a device of this character wherein that section of the table supporting the knife is mountedfor adjustment to thereby control the position of the knife relative to the reliner.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

Referring to these drawings, it will be seen I have provided a supporting frame consisting of the uprights 10 which are connected at their upper ends by a cross brace 11 and intermediate their ends by ,a cross brace 12. The frame is extended on each side of these uprights 10 to provide a support for the two sections of the table, these lateral extensions of the frame being designated 13. Mounted upon one of these extensions 13 is the stationary-section 14: of
on the line wheel 35 the table the inner edge of which is upwardly and inwardly beveled, as at 15. Pivotally mounted upon the other extension 13, as at 16, is the adjustable section 17 of the table.
Mounted between the uprights 10 is a main cylinder or roll 18 which is mounted upon the main shaft 19. This main shaft carrics upon it a, fly wheel 20 and a band wheel 21 over which passes a band 22 extend ing over the band wheel of the shaft of a motor 23. It will be understood that I have illustrated a means for driving the main cylinder which is purely illustrative and that any other suitable means might be used for driving this main cylinder. The space between the two sections 14: and 17 of the table is. disposed immediately beneath the shaft 19 and the periphery of the main cyl-. I
lriounted below this gap between the beveled edge faces ofv the table sections 14 and 17 is a roll 24 mounted upon a shaft 25; this shaft 25 in turn being supported by bearings engaged by the vertical screws 26, these screws being operated. by means of hand wheels or in any othervsuitable manner so that as the screws are shifted in one direc- 2'? within which. operates a sliding blade or knife28 having an upwardly and inwardly beveled cutting edge. The knife 28 bears at its rear edge against anti-frictionrollers 28 mounted upon the. table 17. Disposed beneath the portion ofthe table upon which the knife rests is a slide 29 and stud bolts 30 pass through slots 31 in the table and engage the sli clewith this knife. Mounted upon a bracket 32 projecting from the main frame is a gear wheel having a wrist pin 34:, this gear wheel being a beveled gear wheel and being engaged by a driving gear mounted upon the shaft 19. The knife 28 is connected to the wrist pin by means of a connecting rod 36. Therefore, it will be obvious that as the main cylinder rotates the knife will be given a reciprocating movement transverse to the feed of the reliner passing between the main cylinder and the lower roll 2st.
F or the purpose of raising or lowering the section 17 of the table and thereby raising or lowering the knife blade, I. provide an adjusting screw 27 which is carried by one of the extensions 13. This adjusting screw is provided with a handle 38 whereby the adjusting screw may be turned. By shifting the screw in one direction, the inner margin of the table may be raised and by adjusting the screw in the other direc tion the inner margin of the table may be lowered. C'f course, it will be understood that the inner edge of the knife is cut away or beveled so as to approximately fit over the roll 24.
In the operation of this device, the reliner is fed inward upon the table 14 and passes between the main cylinder and the roll 24 and is driven forward by engagement with the main cylinder. It is brought into contact with the reciprocating knife and the reciprocating knife cuts off a small slice or thin layer from the under face of the liner as it passes through, the amount of this cut being determined by the adjustment of the table section 17 and by the adjustment of the roll 24. By causing the knife to reciprocate, no choking of the knife will occur which would be the case were the knife stationary.
A machine constructed in accordance with my invention is very definite in cutting down or thinning down reliners and skiving the liners so as to provide a smooth interior and exterior surface therefor.
While I have illustrated certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, Ido not wish to be limited to these details ercept as defined in the appended claims as these might be varied in many ways without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim l. A skiving machine of the character described comprising a supporting frame, a fixed table section carried upon the supporting frame, a pivoted table section carried upon the supporting frame and having its inner edge spaced from the inner edge of the fixed table section, a relatively large main power driven cylinder having its axis disposed immediately above the gap between the fixed and adjustable table sections and having its path of movement approximating the upper surfaces of the table section, a lower roll disposed immediately beneath the gap between the table sections, the lower roll being adjustable toward and from the main cylinder, the pivoted table section having a recess upon its upper face at its inner edge, a knife reciprocatingly mounted in said recess, and means operated by the rotation of the main cylinder for reciprocating said knife.
A skiving machine of the character de scribed comprising a supporting frame, stationary table section mounted upon the supporting frame, a table section pivoted intermediate its inner and outer edges and mounted upon the supporting frame, the inner edges of both table sections being spaced from each other and the inner margin of the pivoted table section being formed with a transversely extending recess and being transversely slotted, a blade mounted in said recess, a slide having members passing through said slots and engaging the blade, a main cylinder mounted upon the frame with its axis immediately above the space between the table sections, power operated means for driving said main cylinder, a lower idle roller mounted immediately beneath the inner ends of the table sections, means for vertically adjusting said roll, and means operated by the rotation of the main cylinder for reciprocating said. knife.
3. A skiving machine of the character described comprising a supporting frame, a fixed table section thereon, a pivoted table section thereon, the inner edge of the pivoted section being spaced from the inner edge of.the fixed section and having a re cess upon its upper face, a knife reciprocatingly mounted in said recess, a power driven upper cylinder having its axis disposed immediately above the space between the stationary and adjustable sections of the table, a roller disposed immediately below the gap between the two section of the ta-. ble and vertically adjustable, means operated by the main cylinder for reciprocating said knife, and a screw carried by the main frame and adjustably engaging the pivoted section of the table whereby to raise or lower said pivoted section of the table.
