Abstract
679,442. Shrinking materials. HAAS, H. Jan. 5, 1951 [Jan. 14, 1950], No. 382/51. Class 15 (i). Textile webs and fabrics are shrunk by subjecting the material if it is not already wet by a foregoing treatment to the action of steam, preferably saturated steam, so as to swell the fibres and then passing the material through an atmosphere of cold or warm damp air whilst having the minimum of tensile stress in the material, and, if necessary, subsequently drying the material. A suitable apparatus comprises a steam chest M having a perforated arcuate surface P, a roller W mating with said surface and means for feeding the material S between said roller and said surface and means for passing the steamed material through a damp atmosphere in festooned form over an endless succession of rollers A.
