Abstract
678,540. Furnace roofs. HEUER, R. P. Sept. 5, 1950, No. 21902/50. Class 51 (ii). The roof of a metallurgical furnace, e.g. a steel melting or copper smelting furnace is constructed of acid bricks and non-acid bricks so that areas of the non-acid bricks are spaced apart along the roof with acid bricks between such areas, each of said areas comprising a set of bricks extending transversely of the roof. The invention is shown applied to an open hearth furnace roof, Figs. 2 and 3, in which a preponderant part 5 of the roof area is formed by silica bricks in a conventional manner, but rising from the rear skewback 6 are alternate sections 7, 8, 9 and 10 of key bricks containing chrome ore and magnesite and sections 11 of silica filler bricks. The roof may be thickened in the immediate vicinity of the skewback to form a shoulder or the skewback and a continuous length of adjacent bricks may be made of non-acid material. The transverse lengths of the non-acid sections may be varied as shown along the roof and each section may comprise more than a double course of bricks. The roof near the front skewback, particularly over the furnace doors, may also have the alternate construction. Conventional steel spacer plates are used with the non-acid bricks, care being taken that no joint between an acid and a non-acid brick is provided with such a spacer plate. U.S.A. Specification 2,304,170 is referred to.
