Abstract
1374864 Hearths KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN NV 14 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11789/72 Heading F4B A refractory hearth structure for a shaft furnace, formed of carbon blocks, is characterized in that at least in one of the layers of blocks, at least some of the blocks are arranged with open expansion joints between adjacent blocks. The width of the joints in cold condition corresponds to the thermal expansion of the adjacent refractory blocks into said joints over a temperature range from cold up to 50-200 C. below the normal operating temperature of the elements in the furnace. The layers of blocks may be staggered or angled to one another and also may include filling blocks below the expansion gaps to prevent molten metal running therethrough.
