Abstract
738,321. Furnace walls. SOC. ANON. J. COCKERILL. March 9, 1953 [March 7, 1952], No. 6456/53. Class 51 (2). The walls of a metallurgical furnace, e.g. a melting, refining or heat-treatment furnace, support an independent roof made of bricks supported in a frame, and are so constructed and arranged that the internal surfaces of both side walls are inclined towards the interior of the furnace so as to reduce the span of the independent roof. As applied to a Siemens-Martin open hearth furnace, the inner wall surfaces 3a are curved inwardly, and the roof 4 is supported by suspended beams 4a. This construction inhibits the formation of eddy currents in the gaseous heating stream in the upper part of the furnace. The invention is also applied to a heat treatment furnace with straight sides, Fig. 2 (not shown). The wall surface may be a surface of revolution, e.g. a parabola. In cases where the roof is made of a different material to the walls, material falling therefrom will not attack the said walls chemically.
