Abstract
327,390. Carborundum Co., Ltd., (Carborundum Co.). Jan. 1, 19'29. Linings and walls; roofs.-A furnace, roof or wall is built up of an outer layer of ordinary fireclay bricks 6 and an inner facing layer of thinner bricks 7 which are formed of refractory material of high thermal conductivity, (e.g. silicon carbide), and have integral stems 9 which extend through apertures to the outer surface of the backing layer 6. Inward movement of the lining bricks 7 is prevented by pins 12, Fig. 5, or by the engagement of L-shaped extensions 13. Fig. 7, with shoulders 14 formed on the bricks 6. The joints between the lining bricks 7 are staggered with respect to those of the backing layer 6, and the cross-sectional area of the stem 9 is preferably from one fifth to one third that of the exposed surface of the brick 7. The invention is described with particular reference to flat suspended roofs as shown in Fig. 1, and to tunnel furnace roofs formed in two parts so as to leave a slot through which work-supports, attached to an overhead conveyer, depend into the tunnel. In the former case the roof is supported from beams 4 by hangers 5 which engage in inverted T-shaped slots 8 in the backing bricks 6. In the tunnel-furnace roofs illustrated in Figs. 10, 13, the lining bricks 7, although used. are not shown, these Figures being intended to show more particularly the suspension devices employed to prevent closing of the slot 20. In Fig. 10, the interlocking backing bricks 26 are supported from overhead beams 22 by rods 21 which carry hangers 24 held in position by horizontal tie-rods 25. The roof shown in Fig. 13 comprises two arches, the bricks 26 of which are hooked on to metal plates 27 supported by side beams. Further constructions are described in which some only of the bricks 26 are directly suspended, the remainder being held in position by interlocking engagement with each other and with the directly-supported bricks.
