Abstract

665,551. Furnace linings. CRESPI, G., and BELLA, F. L. D. July 30, 1948, No. 20395/48. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 1st, 1949.] Class 51 (ii). [Also in Group V] A lining for an electric arc furnace is constructed by placing preformed blocks one after the other against the inner wall of the furnace and resting on its base and sealing the joints between adjacent blocks and between the blocks and the inner wall with refractory material similar to that from which the blocks are formed, each block being formed by compressing refractory material in a mould around a metal reinforcing framework comprising a base frame having a shape similar to that of the base of a finished block. The framework may have parts adapted to project from the finished block to facilitate transport thereof. The refractory material may be powdered quartzite mixed with small quantities of lime or kaolin, dolomite mixed with magnesite, powdered dolomite mixed with pieces of dolomite, stabilized dolomite, chromite mixed with kaolin, or magnesite mixed with kaolin, and may be bonded with tar throughout the block or in the lower part of the block. Additional reinforcements, such as pieces of iron rod, may be included in the blocks. As shown in Fig. 2, the reinforcing framework comprises a base frame 9 of iron rods surmounted by a cage 10. In Fig. 3, the base-frame 9 is connected to a light superstructure 11 formed with lifting-hooks 12 and in Fig. 4 the base frame is connected directly to the lifting hooks.
