In a suspended open hearth furnace roof made of basic refractory bricks 1, movement of the bricks due to expansion and deformation is allowed for by suspending the hangers 3 over axles 5 keyed to rollers 6 engaging longitudinal tracks 4. The skewbacks 14 at the rear of the furnace are pivotally and resiliently mounted. The axles may be loosely mounted in the rollers, Fig. 3 (not shown), or the rollers may be replaced by segments, Fig. 4 (not shown). Several hangers may be suspended from a single support with rollers engaging the tracks 4, Fig. 5 (not shown), or the rollers may be attached to the tracks, Fig. 6 (not shown). A modification, Fig. 7, allowing movement in two horizontal directions, has the tracks 4 themselves slung from rollers 15 engaging tracks 16 disposed at right angles to the tracks 4. Universal horizontal movement may be obtained by mounting the suspending members on balls engaging metal plates, Fig. 8 (not shown). The hangers may also be mounted on a roller running along the axle 5, Fig. 9 (not shown).
