Abstract

1,045,987. Furnace hearths. PHOENIXRHEINROHR A.G. VEREINIGTE HUTTEN UND ROHRENWERKE. Feb. 3, 1964 [Feb. 23, 1963], No. 4480/64. Heading F4B. A shaft furnace hearth comprises a layer of elongated upright refractory bricks 1, 2, preferably carbon, tapering in the upward direction thereby preventing upward movement of the layer or part thereof. The bricks 1 are arranged in parallel rows upon a thin base layer B, each brick having two upwardly-tapering sides 4 adjacent bricks of the same row excepting for one pair of adjacent centre bricks 5, 6 which have mating faces normal to the flat top of the base. Similar, but shorter, edge bricks 2 are disposed at either end of each row, said bricks being surmounted by a peripheral brick layer 3 to avoid extension of the horizontal joint 7 to the furnace casing 8. The brick joints of the layer B are offset from the joints between the upright bricks.
