Abstract
896,639. Tilting open hearth furnaces. THRING, M. W. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 6, 1960], No. 4286/60. Class 51 (2). An open hearth furnace comprises a tilting hearth 1 having a fixed arch roof 8 sloping down at each end to form low height uptakes 12, the roof containing openings for burners 14 and oxygen lances 15 disposed alternately in the sloping portions 13. The lances 15 are more steeply inclined than the burners 14 whose flames strike the middle of the bath. The substantially square hearth has longitudinal walls 5, 6 under the arch roof 8 which is supported on water-cooled skewbacks carried by girders 9. The sloping portions 13 become outer roof sections 16 which extend to the outer walls 17 of full width regenerators 18, which have removable layers of packing 19, 20, 21 comprising refractory lumps diminishing in size from the top to the bottom. The Specification also describes a suspended wall (not shown) of insulating brick extending the length of the hearth just outside the hearth wall 5, with slots for the metal and slag-tapping spouts. Charging is carried out through openings 22 with doors 23 on the side of the arch, and cold scrap may be deposited through a removable middle section of the roof.
