Abstract

719,342. Open-hearth furnaces. BROOKE, F. W. May 29, 1952, No. 13665/52. Class 51 (2) An open-hearth furnace, Fig. 6, comprises a unitary structure 2 including a hearth and side walls integral with the hearth and extending up to a stationary roof 3 when said unitary structure is raised, the roof 3 extending beyond the ends of the structure 2 which is tillable relative to the roof about a horizontal axis 19 extending longitudinally of the furnace and located at approximately the line of junction between a side wall 18 of the structure 2 and the roof 3, thereby providing a charging opening 10 between the roof and the top of the other side wall when the structure is lowered, means being provided for tilting the structure. The roof 3 is supported by water-cooled columns 52 and beams 55. The furnace is charged by charging boxes 70; Fig. 16, each having a pusher head 76 operated through a rod 77. When rebuilding the roof, Fig. 18, a water-cooled base 91 supports roof forms 90 and acts as a heat seal for the structure 2. The furnace is provided with the usual air and gas flues, not shown.
