[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In a retort or furnace having upwardly - fired vertical heating-flues 7, the connections between the gas supply flue 8 and the heating-flues is made by passages each including an inclined upper portion 11 opening into the flue 7 a short distance above its base, a lower portion 9, and an enlargement 10, which accommodates a regulating device, preferably in the form of a movable block 12 with a recess 13 connecting the parts 9 and 11. the enlarged portion 10 consists of an horizontal channel extending over a group of flues and accessible from the front wall of the retort battery. A trough-shaped member 16 situated in the heating-flues below the level of the ports 11 serves as a dust collector.
