Class 51 (2) In the arched roof of a Siemens-Martin furnace formed in the hotter regions of high melting point bricks, e.g. chrome-magnesite, and in the cooler regions of silica bricks having a lower melting point, the tendency for the roof to collapse rapidly due to the formation of a low melting point eutectic at the junction between the different kinds of bricks, is alleviated by interposing a layer of non-reactive refractory material, e.g. quartzite containing at least 97 per cent silica or a chromium ore containing at least 60 per cent chromite.. The neutral layer may take the form of brick, a tamping mass or mortar, and the invention is applied, preferably, though not exclusively, to suspended roofs.
