Class 143 An apparatus for sorting pieces of dough by weight comprises a belt conveyer 12 supported on a scale 31, means for feeding pieces singly to the conveyer, means for unlocking the scale only when the conveyer is loaded and means to deflect automatically over or under weight pieces from the stream. As each piece is fed on to the conveyer it pivots a lever 17 which, through a shaft 15, cam 16, lever 19 and rod 22, rocks a toggle lever 20 about a pivot pin 24 and disengages a pair of arms 21, 21a, secured 'to the movable part of the scale, from a bar (not shown), carried by a finned part of the apparatus, so unlocking the scale and, if the piece is under or over weight, allowing the frame 10, together with the loaded conveyer supported thereby, to move to a level determined by the weight of the piece. This movement is transmitted by pin 24 through a linkage (not shown), to a contact arm 26 which is pivoted to a finned part of the scale and co-operates with contacts 30, 30a. Should this movement be sufficient to cause arm 26 to make contact with either of contacts 30, 30a, a circuit is closed through a solenoid 36 which operates a diverting flap (not shown), in a main shoot 32. Subsequent movement of the piece down a diversion shoot automatically returns the flap and opens a passage through the main shoot for normal weight pieces. Movement of the piece off the conveyer 12 into the shoot 32 pivots a second lever 17a which moves arms 21, 21a back into engagement with the finned bar so again locking the scale.
