Class 120(i) A gilling-machine comprises a pair of feed rollers 14, 14, a pair of draw-off rollers 15, 15, driven at a greater speed than the feed rollers, a rotary cylindrical swift including a number of projecting gill pins 8, a number of fibre lifting members 6 adapted when in operative position to project from the swift to lift the fibres from the pins 8 and cam means 11 in association with the swift and so arranged that on rotation of the swift the cam means either causes or allows movement of the lifting members to their operative position. In the embodiment shown the lifting members 6 are normally restrained within the slots 4 in the end plates 1 of the swift by a garter spring 12 said members being lifted by the cam profile as they approach the draw-off rollers 15, 15, to push the fibres from the pins 8. In a second embodiment the lifting members are normally restrained in their lower position by a lever system under the action of a torsion spring. In a further embodiment the lifting members are normally restrained in the slots by the cam profile against coiled compression springs, the cam allowing the said springs to push the members outwards as they approach the draw-off rollers.
