In a retaining arrangement for securing forme plates 5 on the cylin-. der 1 of rotary printing machines in which the forme plates 5 are held at their curved lateral edges and additionally at their straight edges and the retaining devices 13, 13<SP>1</SP> and 2 for the straight and curved edges are clamped by the same tensioning arrangement, springs 8 or 8<SP>1</SP> for the transmission of the axial force are arranged between the clamping bars 2 for the curved edges, or the fixed middle bar 18 on the plate cylinder, and pressure members 10, 11, 11a bearing against the clamping bars 13, 13' for the straight edges of the forme plates 5. The clamps 2 are actuated through springs by a clamping ring 4 movable by means of an eccentric 3 and the curved edges of successive plates 5 are held by axially displaceable locking members 7 anchored in recesses 6 of the cylinder 1. The pressure members 10, 11, 11a have inclined edges which overlie inclined edges 12 on the clamping bars 13, 13<SP>1</SP> so that the pressure transmitted through the springs 8, 8<SP>1</SP> is transmitted to press the bars 13, 13<SP>1</SP> downwardly so that catch bars 15 on the bars 13, 13<SP>1</SP> bear on the plates 5 at their straight edges. On release of the clamping bars 2, the pressure members 10, 11, 11a are released and springs 14 between the bars 13, 13' and cylinder 1 raise the bars to release the straight edges, the spring 8 expanding on a guiding pin 9 retained on the pressure member 10 by a head 17.
