[Class 100 (ii)] In mechanism for locking a stereotype plate to a printing cylinder and including fixed means to hold the plate to the cylinder along one edge and means at the opposite edge to tension the plate resiliently around the cylinder, the resilient tensioning means include a plurality of members, each comprising a series of leaves or laminations and arranged to engage recesses adjacent said opposite edge to tension the plate circumferentially about the cylinder. Recesses near the leading edges of stereotype or electrotype plates 11, 12, Figs. 2 and 3, are engaged by stationary rigid hooks 41 formed on hook plates 40. Recesses near the trailing edge of plate 11 are engaged by hooks 23 in the form of laminated leaf-springs secured in spaced relationship along a torsion shaft 20 to crank blocks 22 forming parts of the shaft, the hooks when not engaging a plate being preloaded by pressing against a surface 26 by means of an inclination of the surface 25 to which they are secured. The shaft 20 is rotated between tension and loose positions by a hand wrench 32 through a worm 31, worm wheel 30, turnbuckle 29 eccentrically pivoted on the wheel 30, and crank arm 28. The worm wheel 30 has two recesses 33, in one of which, when the shaft 20 is in either of the two extreme positions, rests the end of a spring-pressed plunger 34. Between the extreme positions, the plunger is forced back and by means of a cam surface forces a follower button 35 into a recess in the wrench to prevent withdrawal thereof. When the wrench is withdrawn, a second plunger 38 moves into a recess in the shank of the worm 31 to lock the parts in one of the extreme positions. Similar mechanism actuates similar hooks engaging recesses near the trailing edge of the plate 12. Specification 448,896 is referred to.
