Abstract

415,293. Printing-machines. SMITH, W. H., 13, Alcorn Avenue, Toronto, Canada. Nov. 27, 1933, No. 33166. [Class 100 (ii).] Printing-surfaces; blankets. -In means for securing flexible printing-plates or offset-blankets to their cylinders of the kind in which the ends of the plate or blanket are inserted in a narrow longitudinal groove in the cylinder and clamped therein by a bar adapted to be forced edgewise into the groove by devices acting at the ends of the bar, the bar is actuated by collars rotatably mounted on the cylinder shaft and having eccentric grooves engaging pins on the ends of the bar. The collars 12, 14, Figs. 1, 3 and 4, have eccentric grooves 11<x> with slots 11‹ leading to the outside of the collars for the entry of the pins (not shown) extending from the ends of the clamping bars 23, 18. In applying the blanket 10 to the cylinder 8, one end, which is provided with holes, is inserted in the groove of the cylinder and engaged with short pins 16<x>, Fig. 4, projecting from one wall of the groove. The blanket is then wrapped round the cylinder and its other end inserted into the groove. The bar 18, the side of which remote from the pins 16<x> is provided with spike-like projections to engage the blanket, is then inserted so that its end pins engage the grooves 11<x>, and the collars 14 are turned to force the bar fully into the groove. In applying the printing-plate 9 to the cylinder 7, one end is held in the groove by a bar 22 which is pressed against the end of the plate by a spring blade 21 attached to the bar and engaging the opposite wall of the groove. The cylinder is then rotated against the cylinder 8 to wrap the plate about the cylinder and the opposite end of the plate is secured by the bar 23 having sharp projections to engage that end of the plate, and actuated by the collars 12 in a manner similar to that by which the bar 18 was actuated. The spring blade 21 is, by this movement, forced into a recess in the face of the bar 22.
