Abstract

608,617. Printing-surfaces. HARRIS-SEYBOLD-POTTER CO. Oct. 12, 1945, No. 26669. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1942. [Class 100(ii)] A device for clamping a printing-plate on to one member of a printing- couple and particularly for clamping and tensioning a plate on a lithographic or gravure printing- cylinder, comprises a housing 13, Fig. 4, having a groove 25 therein to receive the end of a plate 12 and formed with oppositely-disposed walls 26, 26<1>, and a bar 27 in the groove adapted to be rocked 'to grip or release the plate 12, the plate, end being wedged between the wall 26 and the bar 27 backed by the wall 26<1> when the bar is rocked in one direction and released when the bar is rocked in the opposite direction. The printing-cylinder 10, Fig. 1, has the usual gap 11 in which are two housings 13, 14, one for each end of the plate 12 the former extending the full length of the cylinder and the latter is in three sections. The bars 27 may be turned by a pin wrench or by means of screws 40 each of which engages a screw-threaded sleeve 43, Fig. 4, having lateral wings 46 engaging a slot 47 in a bar 27. The screw 40 advances until its end 49 meets the wall 38 of the gap 11 whereupon the sleeve 43 moves to the right to rock the bar 27 into clamping position: further rotation of the screw causes the housing 13, or one of the housings 14, to slide bodily to tension the plate 12. The housings are returned to normal position by springs 55 and the bars 27 by springs 32. Lateral adjustment of the plate 12 is effected by screws 56, 57 engaging the ends of the housing 13 and the ends of the two end housings 14 respectively: the housings 13, 14 are prevented from rising by cover plates 15, 16. In a modification, Fig. 10, a cylindrical clamping-bar 75 is provided mounted in a groove 96 in a housing 71 and rocked about a line joining points 79 on pins 76 by hand or by means of a screw 83 so as to clamp the end of the plate against an inclined surface 82. The bar 75 is held in a slot 85 in a slide 84 having notches 87, 88 in one of which a spring-pressed detent 89 engages in each position of the bar 75.
