Abstract

456,902. Printing surfaces and apparatus. WALE, B., 734, Mather Street, Chicago U.S.A. May 17, 1935, No. 14520. Convention date, March 28. [Class 100 (ii)] An etched sheet metal typographic printing plate adapted for use on a rotary press is formed of material of thickness of the order of À008 inches, both the relief printing portions and the non-printing portions being of uniform thickness, and that of the former being not more than twice that of the latter, so that a plate is obtained which is sufficiently thin and flexible to conform to a cylindrical carrier and is sufficiently strong to be held thereon under tension. The plate 1, Fig. 2, is preferably of zinc or copper and is etched in the non-printing areas to a depth of À002 to À004 inches. Margins 3, and if desired bands 2<a> along the edges, are left of undiminished thickness, the margins being bent along etched lines 4 to form end channels 6, 7, Fig. 1. The printing roller 8 which may be small, particularly when used for printing billheads or the like, is formed with a groove 9 in which the nested channels 6, 7 of the plate are secured by a clamping bar 10, attached to the cylinder by screws 11, the plate thus being suitably tensioned round the cylinder. In a modification, the ends of the plate are not nested but are clamped between two bars, both of which fit into the groove 9 of the cylinder. Co-operating with the cylinder 8 is an impression roller 12, to which a paper or rubber tympan sheet 16 is attached by securing its ends in recesses in a bar 18 held by screws 19 in a groove in the roller. The surfaces of the rollers 8, 12 are spaced apart a distance slightly less than the thickness of the paper to be printed, this being fed mainly by the co-operation of the printing portions of the plate and the impression roller. The paper may be fed into the pass between the rollers by the feed devices disclosed in Specification 446,043 which is referred to. The inking roller 15 is spaced from the printing roller by a distance equal to the thickness of the ink film to be deposited on the printing surface.
