[Class 100 (ii).] A rotary printing-machine is constructed so as to be capable of printing from lithographic, intaglio, or other flexible printing-surfaces by the direct or offset method, by the employment of printing, offset, or impression cylinders to which can be secured offset or impression blankets g, Fig. 1, or, by the aid of packing, thinner printing-plates may be used on the same cylinder. The cylinders are constructed of such a radius that the placing of the thick blanket on it makes this part of a cylinder the radius of which is equal to the radius of the pitch circle of the driving-gear of the cylinder. The blanket g is secured to a pivoted clamp b, Fig. 1, fitted with tensioning-screws k, and the blanket is formed with perforations which are received by stops d on the lower jaw c of jaws c, e which by means of screws f are made to grip the blanket g. In the case of metal printing-plates the edge of the plate is aligned against the stops d and the plate is held by friction only. In the machine shown in Fig. 3, the cylinder l is fitted with a lithographic plate s which is damped by rollers r and is inked by a blanket r on the cylinder m with which cooperates inking rollers p. The cylinder m may be fitted with a printing-plate and the cylinder l with an offset blanket, the rollers r being removed from the cylinder l and applied to the cylinder m. In a further modification, the cylinder m is moved out of action and an intaglio plate fitted to the cylinder l which is provided with an inking-roller dipping in a trough, and with a scraper blade.
