461,744. Printing processes and apparatus. WOODHEAD, H. July 24, 1935, No. 21009. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus ; platen machines ; intaglio printing.-In the printing of bank notes &c. in colours from an intaglio or other printing-plate, a table 1 which is rotated intermittently carries one or a number of similar printing-plates, and at the stationary positions of the table 1, the plate 2 is first inked all over in a ground colour by means of inking-rollers 9 which receive ink from a distributing slab 6 supplied with ink by rollers 7 from a disc 5, roller 4, and duct 3. A pivoted doctor 10 attached to the slide carrying the rollers 9 scrapes the plate 2 as the rollers 9 recede from the plate 2. At further stations the plate 2 is inked by means of patterned pads 11, Fig. 3, which are moved first into contact with slabs 6 receiving ink of different colours by means similar to that described for the first slab. Finally, each pad 11 transfers ink to the desired part of the plate 2, and when this has received a full design in three colours an impression in multi-colour is obtained at station V on a sheet supplied by grippers which is printed by the aid of a platen or other impression member. At station VI the plate may be cleaned automatically, or by hand, prior to commencing a further series of operations. The number of colours applied may be varied.
