803,546. Printing-machines. DE LA RUE & CO., Ltd., T. May 15, 1957, No. 15467/57. Class 100(2) Rotary machines; inking- apparatus. A rotary printing press comprises a plate cylinder carrying an intaglio plate, an impression cylinder co-operating therewith, means to ink the plate, wiping means to remove ink from the plane surface of the plate, and further means to supply ink in a predetermined pattern to the wiped surface of the plate so that the pattern is in desired register with the intagliated parts, whereby paper may be printed simultaneously with a letter press-printed design and an intaglio-printed design. The plate carried on the cylinder 1 is inked by means 4, 7. Excess ink is removed bv a driven endless belt 8 of rubberized felt, from which ink is removed by a doctor 11. The plane surface of the plate is then wiped clear of ink by three units each comprising a band 12 of calico or paper passed from a roller 13 to a roller 14, passing between the plate and an oscillating pressure member 16. The intaglio plate prints the main design on bank-notes 3 passed between it and the impression cylinder 2. Relief plates each bearing the part of a background design to be printed in one of two colours are carried by cylinders 17 and inked by means 20. 19. with ink of two respective colours. The complete design is transferred to a roller 18 covered with a resilient material, and thence to the wiped intaglio plate. The combined background and main designs are therefrom printed in three colours on the bank-notes. Alternatively, the roller 18 may contact a further cylinder supporting a relief plate of the complete background design whence the design is passed to a further transfer roller and thence to the intaglio plate. The resilient material which covers the roller 7 may be cut away at a point in register with a part of the intagliated design which it is desired to reproduce on the bank-note as an embossed impression, so that that part of the intaglio plate is not inked and the impression is obtained with a background of either of the letter-press colours.
