Abstract

701,752. Printing surfaces; overlays and underlays. EVANS, O. April 13, 1951, No. 8721/51. Class 100 (2) A arcuate printing plate 8 is made ready for printing by forming a reverse overlay 30 for the plate and a shorter underlay 20 for the concave back of the plate, positioning the underlay on the concave back in radial register with the reverse overlay and subjecting the overlaid and underlaid plate to deforming pressure exerted by rollers 38, 40. The overlay is then removed and the plate may be mounted on a cylinder together with the underlay, or the underlay may also be removed and the back of the plate shaved before mounting. The underlay is made shorter than the plate by progressively shortening it throughout its length with respect to the surface of the printing plate as described in Specification 433,243. The reverse overlay may be made as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,088,398 or 2,256,921.
