Printing processes; printing-surfaces.-A printing-block for printing letterpress is treated by mechanical, chemical, or physical means to modify certain letters, words, or phrases so that these letters &c., when printed, will contrast with the remaining matter. The modification may be effected by hammering the block with a fluted die to produce ribbed characters by applying an acid through a stencil, or by applying a red hot gauze upon the block. A stereotype plate may be cast from a matrix having certain portions of increased thickness produced by applying a powder to the matrix through a stencil, to produce the modified characters on the plate. A similar result may be obtained by underlaying the paper or other material to be printed to cause certain characters to print darker than the remainder.
