A process of producing a lithographic printing plate comprises the steps of forming a laminated plate of a lamina of metallic foil and a lamina of deformable backing material, graining the exposed surface of the foil lamina, impressing an inked relief surface into the grained surface to create an inked image area at a distance inwardly of the grained surface beyond the printing plane of the surface by the indentation of the foil lamina, and thereafter forcing the foil lamina at the image area outwardly to dispose the image area at a printing plane at the exposed surface of the foil lamina. The metallic lamina may consist of aluminium foil from one to four thousandths of an inch thick, and the backing may consist of strong paper or card stock. The graining may be accomplished by sand-blasting and the inlaid relief surface is impressed by means of an inked forme or by typing through an inker ribbon. The ink on the plate is allowed to set and the plate is then treated with a weak acid and gum arabic to make the non-image area more waterreceptive and ink repellant. The depressed image areas are then raised to a proper printing plane by swaging or by passing the plate between pressure rollers.
