Abstract

246,525. John, R. Jan. 26, 1925, [Convention date]. Blankets ; offset printing.-A rubber or other elastic impression or off-set blanket is secured in an unstretched condition to a metal backing sheet by which it may be secured to a cylinder or other member. The blanket may be secured to the cylinder &c. in such a way as to allow it to have a slight bodily movement thereon. An ordinary blanket A consisting of layers of rubber and fabric is secured to a flexible backing sheet 6 of zinc, aluminium, iron, copper or other metal by means of a thin sheet of celluloid. The ends of the blanket are clamped by screws 9 between strips 7, 8 by which it is secured to the cylinder 10. The strip 8 on the leading end of the blanket is mounted in a recess 13, Fig. 4, in the cylinder, bearing against a shoulder 14 and being held down by a set-screw 15. The strip 8, Fig. 5, at the opposite end is mounted in a recess 17 in a roller 16 and is pressed against a shoulder 18 by a set-screw 19. Rotation of the roller 16 by the pull of the blanket is prevented by the usual ratchet-and-pawl device. The metal sheet 6 terminates short of the rear clamping device so as to leave a free portion of blanket a that can adapt itself to the curvature of the roller 16 and that will allow a slight bodily movement of the sheet 6 and blanket during the operation of the press. In using an offset blanket, mounted as described above, in a rotary offset press, the printing plate on the plate. cylinder is packed up with paper so as to increase the diameter of the plate cylinder and cause it to have a slightly greater surface speed than the blanket. This results in a slight bodily creep of the blanket on its cylinder when receiving an impression thereby preventing wear of the blanket by friction.
