Abstract

626,197. Printing surfaces &c. JONES, K. W. Aug. 18, 1947, No. 22859. [Class 100 (ii)] Means for attaching a stereo backing 3 or like flexible member to a printing or impression cylinder 1 or platen of a printing machine comprises two blades 7, 8 of spring steel, hard brass, or other metal mounted on the cylinder or platen and over which portions 5, 6 of the backing or flexible member of Manilla paper, cloth, sheet metal or other material are lapped, two clamping members 9, 10 operatively associated with the blades and each effective to clamp the respective portion 5 or 6 between it and one of the blades, and means operable after clamping to tension the backing or flexible member on the surface of the cylinder or platen. The backing 3 may be secured to a stereo 4 of indiarubber or the like. The blade 7 is mounted on the cylinder and the blade 8 on a tensioning bar 14 rotatable on trunnions 15 in the cylinder end plates 2 and carrying arms 16 within or outside the plates 2 in which is eccentrically journalled at 18 the clamping member 10, the clamping member 9 being eccentrically journalled at 13 in the plates 2. Holes 19, 20, 21 are provided in the members 9, 10, 14 to allow of turning by tommy-bars. The members 9, 10 are held in clamping position by friction, slightly flexing the blades. The member 14 may be held in tensioning position by ratchet means, or by screws engaging the trunnions 15. The blade 7 forms a means for registering a backing on the cylinder. The stereo may have lines across and down it to facilitate accurate positioning on the backing. When applied to a platen, the blades are mounted at opposite ends thereof. In another form, both blades may be mounted on rotatable units, or both may be fixed and tensioning be effected by an eccentric roller on a screw or spring-controlled pressure bar. The bearings of the various members may extend beyond the plates 2 for external operation.
