Abstract

564,650. Stamping and embossing. HELLIWELLS, Ltd., and RANSOM, J. May 17, 1943, No. 4306. [Class 83 (iv)] Granular material such as sand is employed as a bolster instead of the usual rubber block. The base is formed with a platen surface d that is a sliding fit in the sand container b normally supported by a strong spring e or by other resilient means. A sheet a to be formed into a flanged hub or cup is supported on the surface of the sand by a draw ring and the die f is superposed. The press head g has a sealing ring h to engage the container b and on descent forces the container over the platen d causing the sand to draw the sheet into the die f. The surface of the sand may be covered with a thin confining sheet of rubber, fabric or leather, &c. and' in some instances freer flowing is secured by adding liquid to convert the sand &c. into a paste. The sand may be heated when work is required to be hot drawn. Sheet metal may be embossed or decorated.
