[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII, XV, XVI and XXII] Sheet material e.g. sheet celluloid or plastic, is decorated by impressing it with a die formed of a wire mesh with a recessed design area. The design area may be formed by impressing a cut-out 11 into the wire mesh 12, by indenting, by using a hand or power driven tool, by impressing one or more times with a suitable die or in any other suitable way, or by impressing it with a coarse-mesh fabric with its mesh lines at an angle to those of the wire-mesh 12. Further, a design may be applied to both surfaces of the wire mesh. The die may be used in an ordinary press and several sheets may be decorated at one operation. Alternatively, the die 12 may be fitted as a sleeve to a cylinder 16 provided with a rubber backing 17 and pressed by a spring 20 against a counter-roller 18. The effect produced varies, depending on whether the roller 18 has a resilient or non-resilient covering. For light work, the die may be of copper or brass, but phosphor-bronze, nickel alloy, chromium or the metal known under the Registered Trade Mark " Monel " is used where greater resistance against wear is required. If the material is subjected to heat treatment, the heat passes through the mesh.
