Abstract

790,353. Moulding acoustic diaphragms. HAWLEY 'PRODUCTS CO. July 16, 1956 [July 27, 1955], No. 21882/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a method of moulding a diaphragm a piece of cloth is impregnated with a thermosetting resin, preferably in the form of a varnish, and is then placed in a combination moulding and embossing die 8, of which the male member 9 meets the female member 10 in that part of the die which forms the central portion a of the diaphragm, but is spaced therefrom in that part which shapes the peripheral portion b. Sufficient pressure is applied to cause the resin in the portion a to flow and fill the interstices of the fabric, whereas in the portion b the diaphragm is merely shaped or embossed and the resin does not flow. The pressure may be applied by a conventional moulding press, preferably a toggle press, the die being heated by an electrically heated plate bolted thereto, or by a steamheated press platen.
