1396573 Sheet forming T SAITO 16 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971 (2) 15 Oct 1971 21 Dec 1971 18 Feb 1972 24 May 1972] 38295/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division B6] A sheet 3 of plastics material made in imitation of leather is embossed against a member 2 bearing a pattern of grooves 11 by introducing a heated fluid (e.g. air) under pressure into an open ended pressure vessel 1 which is in sealing engagement with the rear surface of the sheet 3. The vessel may be divided by an apertured plate 9 into chambers 4 and 5. The chamber 4 is provided with a fluid inlet 6 and electric heaters 8, and the chamber 5 with an inlet 7 for fluid under pressure. Cooling fluid, e.g. water may be circulated through passages 10 and 13. In an alternative form, Fig. 2, the pressure vessel 21 is a single chamber 26 with an inlet 25 for heated fluid under pressure. The embossing member 22 is shaped to deform as well as emboss the sheet 23. Suction passages 30 may communicate with the grooves 28 of the embossing pattern. Before embossing, the passages 30 may be charged with heated fluid under pressure to force the sheet 23 away from the embossing surface to thereby render the sheet more pliable. A reinforcing material (e.g. glass fibres or fibres of non-woven cloth and a binder) may be sprayed on to the unembossed surface of the sheet, whilst the sheet is still in contact with the embossing member (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively a cloth-like or elastomeric material may be bonded to or coated on the unembossed surface. A foaming plastics material (e.g. a urethane resin) may be injected into the downwardly deformed recess portion of the sheet to provide a resilient cushioning (Fig. 4, not shown). The process may be applied to a web of imitation leather which is advanced intermittently through an embossing device of the type shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The imitation leather sheet may comprise a vinyl coated fabric.
