Abstract

1491532 Moulding foam plastics straps with embossed patterns T MASHIDA 6 March 1975 [13 March 1974 22 April 1974] 9391/75 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions A1-A3] A strap 10 having an embossed pattern, e.g. a watch strap or a belt is moulded from a laminated sheet comprising a backing layer 7 of foamable thermoplastic resin and a face layer 5 which is embossable, by closing a mould 4 having the desired pattern about a portion of the sheet, maintaining the mould closed under pressure and heating the sheet in the mould in a high frequency dielectric heating device to expand the foamable material so that the resulting pressure embosses the desired pattern on the surface of the sheet to form the strap 10. The two mould halves 4a, 4b are cast from silicone rubber against a natural leather prototype. A fluorine containing resin core is used to form the hole for the pin of the buckle. Face layers 5, 6 of foamed polyurethane may be provided on both sides of one or more foamable backing layers 7 and non-woven fabric reinforcing layers 8. The inner layers may be inserted into the outer ones after the latter have been heat sealed peripherally; or all of the layers may be heat sealed together, or stuck together before stamping from a larger sheet. The foamable backing layers may comprise thermoplastic polyurethane, P.V.C., polyvinyl alcohol, nylon, natural rubber, or neoprene and may be partly pre-foamed.
