Abstract

1314452 Injection moulding cellular articles IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 21856/70 Addition to 1176813 Heading B5A In a method of making an injection moulded article having a foam core 10 sandwiched between non-foamed surface skins 11 and an area of unfoamed material 17 surrounded by the foamed core sandwich, after filling the mould cavity but before the material has set, a tool 14 (Fig. 6) is forced against the surface of the non- foamable material so as to compress and fuse together opposed portions of the non-foamable layers thereby forcing the foamable plastics material from between the opposed layers. The compressed portion may be sufficiently thin to be removed after the article is removed from the mould. In Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown), there may be two opposed tool members (7, 8) moved towards one another. Fig. 7 shows a further modification in which the tool members 7, 8 are ring-shaped. The ends of the tool members may be chamfered.
