Abstract

1510300 Injection moulding; locating inserts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 July 1975 [1 April 1974 18 March 1975] 14282/74 and 11185/75 Heading B5A An injection moulded plastics article containing an encapsulated rigid insert 4 is made by placing the insert against the mould face of a first mould member 2, injecting plastics material through an opposed mould face in a second mould member 1, and effecting relative movement between the insert 4 and the first mould face while maintaining the insert supported by spaced pins 5 passing through the first mould member 2 so that the plastics material flows into the space so formed between the insert and the first mould face thereby encapsulating the insert. The movement between the insert and the mould face is produced by moving either the first mould member 2 (Figs. 1, 2) or the pins 5 (Figs. 6 and 7), or both (not shown). Non-foaming plastics material may be used but preferably it is foamable so that it will fill the space occupied by the pins 5 when they are withdrawn. The foamable material may be sandwiched between non-foam layers in the manner disclosed in Specification 1,156,217. The injection pressure may be high enough to prevent foaming during injection, the foam expanding only when the mould cavity is enlarged by movement of the first mould member 2 or by an insert 4 which contains a cavity 13 (Fig. 6). Wooden or hollow or T-section metal inserts may be encapsulated in polyurethane, P.V.C., or polypropylene to form window frames, furniture or car bumpers. Two of the pins 5 may be attached to the insert in a bumper to form means of attachment to a vehicle.
