Abstract

1,239,219. Moulding cellular articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 Oct., 1968 [25 Sept., 1967; 5 Jan., 1968], Nos. 43539/67 and 861/68. Heading B5A. In a process for moulding an article of foamed plastics material wherein the foam-forming mixture is introduced into and allowed to expand in the mould, a laminate comprising an extensible non-cellular layer impermeable to the mixture and a layer of flexible cellular material is located in the mould to form a surface part on the article. Suggested articles are pipe insulation sections, car trim components such as arm rests, seat cushions or other upholstery such as chair frames or shells, fascia padding, toys, buoys, lifebelts, perambulator shells and shop window models. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, relating to the making of a chair shell in a twopart mould 1, 2, two laminates 3, 5 and 4, 6 are located in the mould as shown and the foaming mixture is introduced through a grommet 8. The impermeable layers 5, 6 are films of polyurethane elastomer and the cellular layers 3, 4 are of flexible polyurethane foam. Rubber latex could be used for one or both layers. The layers of the laminates may be formed separately then bonded by an adhesive or one layer may be formed in situ on the other layer. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the lower impermeable layer is the middle layer of a sandwich laminate having outer layers of flexible polyurethane foam. The laminates may be vacuum formed before the introduction of the foaming mixture. Where an impermeable layer is on the outside it may be coloured, embossed or decorated or may be so applied to the cellular layer as to have a wrinkled or leather appearance. Where a flexible cellular layer is on the outside it may have bonded to it a pigmented, embossed or decorated layer e.g. a second impermeable layer or a fabric.
