Abstract

1370075 Injection moulding IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18378/72 Heading B5A In a "sandwich moulding" process at least one of the mould members comprises a slidably mounted retractable component 5 which is in the non-retracted position (Fig. 2) during injection of the skin material, but is retracted before or during injection of the core material, but before the mould cavity is filled (Fig. 4, not shown). In one example (Figs. 1-4) the mould is for making a 3-bladed fan and the invention reduces the disparity in skin thickness at the hub periphery 3 and the blade extremity 4. Figure 5 shows a mould 10, 11 for making a shoe sole and comprising two retractable mould members 12, 13 adjacent the heel portion 14. On injection of a foamable core material (18) the members 12, 13 are retracted. The result is a thicker skin in the toe portion than in the heel portion. A further small charge (19) of skin material may be injected and the mould members 10-13 moved apart to permit the core material to foam. Figure 8 shows a female mould member 21 provided with a central sprue 22 and a pair of retractable bars 23 which are in contact with an opposed male mould member (24) Fig. 9 (not shown) during injection of skin material. After retraction, the bars 23 lie flush with the surface of the mould member 21. The result is an even distribution of skin material in the final moulding. In a further' example (not shown) the retractable mould components are flush with the mould surface in their non-retracted position so that in the retracted position the flow path is widened. A protruding component may be retracted more than or less than is necessary to make it flush thereby producing protrusions or depressions in the final moulding. Separate sprue channels for the skin and core materials may be used. Numerous examples of suitable thermoplastic and thermosetting moulding materials are given. Instead of enlarging the mould cavity to permit foaming the pressure on the core material may be reduced by retracting the injection ram.
