Abstract

964,203. Making foamed hollow articles LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGSG.m.b.H. Jan. 4, 1961 [Jan. 7, 1960], No. 352/61. Heading B5A. Articles, e.g. refrigerator casings, of foamed thermoplastic material, e.g. polyurethane, on an outer or inner casing of thermoplastic material, e.g. polystyrene, the two layers being bonded together by incorporation of a liquid which slightly dissolves the casing, e.g. hydrocarbon halides, in the foam material, are made by a method comprising injection moulding of the inner or outer casing in a closed mould followed by replacement of the outer mould or mould core respectively by larger or smaller respective parts so that foam material may be expanded in the space left when this mould is closed. Fig. 1 shows a machine for moulding an outer layer of foamed material on an inner rigid casing. An injection core 1 is moved into a mould 2 and the inner casing is injection moulded. The core 1 is raised with the inner casing and the mould 2 is moved on its support 3 so that a mould 5 with a larger cavity takes its place. Hinged nozzles 6 are used to charge the mould 5 with unfoamed material in liquid form and are then swung back to the position shown in Fig. 1. The core 1 is lowered to leave a gap at the top of the mould 5 and the foam material expands and sets in the mould cavity. The foaming is effected by blowing agents in the foam material. The core 1 may be made to move laterally instead of the moulds, and two identical cores may be provided, so that one coacts with the mould 2 while the other coacts with the mould 5, either on a rotary table or on a laterally movable support. In the latter case two moulds 5 are provided one on each side of the mould 2. Reinforcements, e.g. metal frameworks, may be incorporated in the foam material by placing them in the mould 5 before foaming. In Fig. 5 such a framework 13 is shown which bears against the moulded casing 10, and may be bonded to it, and against the mould 5, through angle pieces 12. Holes 14 allow free expansion of the foam material, and excess material 15 is cut off at 16 after moulding, and the rough edge left thereby may be covered by a capping (Fig. 7, not shown). Cavities may be formed in the foam layer for insertion of locks or temperature regulators by the use of multipart rigid cores 20, 21, 22, Fig. 8, held in place in the mould 5 by bolts, as 25, or magnetically. Double wall casings may also be injection moulded and the foam material introduced as before.
