Abstract
921,815. Moulding foamed elastomers. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 43261/59. Class 87(2). A mould for use with the expanding elastomer foams, such as the polyurethanes, comprises a pan 10 to contain the elastomer and having a cover 11, hollow cores 12 open at their lower ends being secured to the cover at spaced intervals and depending downwardly into the pan, the dimensions of the opening at the lower end of each of the cores 12 substantially corresponding with the cross-sectional dimensions of the hollow of the core. The upper ends of the cores 12 may be either open or closed. Slots may extend upwardly from the lower ends of the cores 12 and these slots may be of uniform width or taper upwardly. During the moulding and expansion of the polyurethane foam or other expanding elastomer, when the mould itself has become completely filled with expanded foam, the open lower ends of the cores 12 permit enough free movement of the expanding foam to prevent pressure build-up of the foam beyond critical limits and avoid possible densification and/or collapse of the foam structure.
