607,235. Photomechanical printing surfaces. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Jan. 16, 1946, No. 1463. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1941. [Class 98 (ii)] A relief printing member is made by impregnating, throughout its thickness, with a bichromate a self-supporting elastic material, stretching this member by an amount equal to the elongation thereof when in use for printing, exposing the stretched member beneath a light-stencil to render it differentially soluble, partially removing the soluble areas, and allowing the printing member to return to its normal size. In the preferred embodiment, a sheet of polyvinyl alcohol soluble in cold water impregnated with sodium dichromate is used. The " distorted relief printing member produced is wrapped around a printing cylinder so that the printing surface is stretched to the same extent as during its production so that a true copy of the design to which it was exposed is printed. If desired, the printing member may be carried on a transparent substance which is not affected by the wash-out development step so that only the front surface of the member stands out in relief. A suitable backing layer is a polyvinyl alcohol soluble only in hot water.
