Abstract

707,662. Photographic type-composing. HIGONNET, R. A. E., and MOYROUD, L. M. Oct. 8, 1951 [Nov. 2, 1950], No. 23392/51. Classes 98(1) and 98(2) A matrix member for a photographic type-composing machine carries character matrices each bearing an individual character having light-permeable areas so that exposure of a photosensitive surface through the matrix results in a characterimage with exposure areas corresponding to the light-permeable areas of the matrix. The matrix member may be made by engraving a lattice on a transparent disc, coating the disc with a photosensitive layer, and photographically printing transparent character images on, the layer. The characters be transparent on an opaque background, with a grid of opaque lines superimposed thereon to break up the character into a number of transparent areas. Preferably, as shown, the character is broken up by opaque lines 11 into transparent areas 10 in a manner adapted to each character. When the photosensitive surface (e.g. carbon paper) is exposed the areas thereof corresponding to areas 10 are light-struck. The carbon paper is then transfered to the printing surface, which is etched in the areas coresponding to the areas 10, forming cavities which receive the ink. Since the ink spreads in making the impression, the edges of areas 10 are made concave with respect to the bounding line 11 of the character. Specification 687,722 is referred to.
